Which major should I pick if I want to design new innovative technology such as mobile phones and computers?

I start college next fall and I know exactly what I want to do with my life. I want to design and construct new electronics for a company such as Apple, HTC, LG, etc. I want to be included in new projects regarding new technology, and in fact manage and lead a team or company in producing them. I am wondering which major or majors I should pursue as I want to encompass Business Management alongside Electrical Engineering. But which specific Electrical engineering degree do I need?

Research each of the companies you’re interested in, surf to their web, and check out the careers page. You’ll find very specific requirements for what each wants in their employees and you’ll be getting the information straight from them.

LG, for example, has that info here http://us.lge.com/about/job_posting.jsp

Do some research, what you’re describing doesn’t sound like electrical engineering to me at all. It could be electronic engineering or mechanical engineering though. Make sure what you want to do isn’t really management and not engineering at all. Usually, the person that thought up an idea, the engineer that designs it, the marketer that decides how to get it out in the world, the ops manager/industrial engineer that decides how to have it made, and the genl manager that runs the company that sells them – are not all the same guy. None of those are the guy on the line that actually puts the parts together or the salesman that gets it to you.

Your best bet would be to start a major in Electrical or Electronic Engineering and then apply for Internships at those companies you mentioned. From there, you can tailor your Major and Minor Degree requirements with specific input from people already in those positions. The problem with trying to be specific before actually getting into college is that the technology is advancing way too fast for courses to keep up. Good luck!
