Is becoming an auto mechanic a good idea with all of the new technology?

Posted by admin on Feb 26, 2010 in new technology |

I was going to school about 3 years ago to become A.S.E certified but I had a child and had to leave very early into my schooling. I always wanted to get dirty and turn a wrench, you know. Well now I am tasting it I want to become a mechanic so bad but I am afraid that with all of the new technology(hybrids and the such) that getting dirty and having fun with horsepower will not be long lasting. I would love to see other peoples opinion on this especially car guys/or gals. Just remember this is my future were discussing and I realy need some help to decide whether or not to go for it.Thanks.

my husband is an ase master, he still gets very dirty at work, trust me. and yes, he does see 3-4 hybrids in his work bay on a daily basis.

sure, there are computers to replace and etc but you’ll always have ball bearings, steering knuckles, transmissions, exhaust work, engine rebuilds, tie rods, and on and on.

hybrids are a blast to work on… provided you’ve got the safety equipment.

go for it. if you like cars and you like tearing things apart, then by all means do it!

make sure to pick up your 2 years of work experience when you can, you won’t get your cert’s until you have the work experience even if you do pass the tests. good luck!

Good point. With the increasing technology, you run the risk of becoming more and more a slave to the almighty computer. If you can find an angle that still has the opportunity to problem solve and be creative then I think that it will be much more satisfying.

It will be a challenge to avoid becoming a service technician to a computer but I think that it is possible. I also think that this is going on in almost EVERY job these days so it won’t likely be any better anywhere else.

Why not embrace the new technology but put your own spin on it? (pardon the pun)

I think you should go for it. There is a great need for mechanics always, and if you find one that really loves what they are doing, it’s a great thing! You can take classes at any technical college to get up to date on all the newer technology, and there will always be older cars around that will need fixin. Great career choice!

there is only one way to go my friend.. you need to be a motorcycle mechanic. you can turn a wrench and you dont have to stand under a hot ass car all day, plus there is not as many motorcycle mechanics out there to compete with for jobs. think about it, you can be certified in 6 months. its not like its the size of a car or anything.

If you are not a gomper then you should be able to take advantage of the new technology as a mechanic.
If you are a gomper then there is little hope for you no matter what you do.
    IMO IMO

    Gomper:
A person who is so mentally challenged, they have other people dress them (i.e. striped pants and polka-dot shirt). You probably work with one.

I figure you are not a gomper based on your writing, so, go for it.

well, i think a mechanic would be a very respectable career and, from the sounds of things, its something you really want to do. that should be your first priority. find waht you like doing, and if its fixing cars and getting greasy, then by all means, grease away. remember, this is your life, are you living it for yourself?
